The History of the Gold American Buffalo
The U.S. Mint started production of the American Buffalo, America’s first 24-karat, pure gold (.9999% fineness) one-ounce coin, in June of 2006. The coin’s design is based on American sculptor James Earle Fraser’s revered Buffalo Nickel of 1913. The American Buffalo’s obverse (front) features the profile of an American Indian. It is believed the Native Americans depiction is based on three different American Indians, two of whom modeled for Fraser. The reverse (back) depicts an iconic American bison believed to be modeled after a bison named Black Diamond, a popular attraction at New York’s Zoological Gardens.
